“weird red thing”
At the southeast corner of Zucotti Park, home of Occupy Wall Street, is Joie de Vivre, a 70-foot-tall red steel sculpture by Mark di Suvero. When I went by the park the other day, the organizers of the protests were meeting underneath the sculpture to discuss logistics. The three “legs” of the structure delineated the space within which the group formed its loose circle. The structure functioned as a shelter, except that it provided no privacy nor relief from the cold and wind and competing sounds. All the same, it was striking to see how the sculpture was being used. Now, away from Wall Street, I’m really into references to Joie de Vivre in publicly posted notes at NYC General Assembly: The Official Website of the GA at #OccupyWallStreet.
